Valves for the Mining Industry
One of the least thought about, but most crucial types of valves in a mining operation is the check valve. Check valves ensure the one-way flow of fluid throughout a piping system and protect pumps and compressors from backflow. Visit our site to learn more: www.dft-valves.com/blog/valves-mining-industry/

    Thanks a lot for this great presentation. Which arrangement do you suggest for a line that needs a check valve but can handle a very wide range of flowrates. If I design for the low flowrate, then the Cv will be too small for the high flowrate. Is a split range of check valves a standard configuration? Is there any special requirement for that?

    Please let me ask one question about the spring assistance stope for water harmmer in pipe ....why can they use a rubber gasket to stop the closing and opening in the pipe valve to stope the water harmmer instead of adding spring...is that really possible

    • @debmanz6034
      @debmanz6034 2 года назад

      Ajayi, Water Hammer is pressure spikes that can easily exceed five to ten times the working pressure of the system. This can cause serious damage to pipelines, pipe joint gaskets, pumps, and other components of the system. A rubber gasket would not solve the water hammer problem. Instead, the spring assist on the check valve starts to close the disc as the forward velocity of the fluid slows, minimizing or preventing the slam of the pressure spike.

    So, In short water hammer is a reverse flow as you are closing the valve and untill the valve fully closed you still have water hammer. In order to eliminate water hammer you have to close the valve before the water reverses.

    what will happen is the check valve is installed right on top of the pump discharge??

    • @Dft-valves
      @Dft-valves 4 года назад

      When a check valve is installed right on top of the pump discharge the valve sees a great deal of turbulent flow. This can cause tremendous instability in the closure mechanism of the check valve whether it’s the disc in a swing check or axial flow check or the doors of a double door check valve the closure mechanism will be responding to the turbulent flow. Eventually this constant motion will cause wear and failure. Of the 3 types of check valves mentioned, the axial flow valve may be the best suited for this environment if the design incorporates a single, concentric spring. However it will be very important to do the sizing calculations for the valve to make sure that there is sufficient flow to fully open the disc and that the disc is against the full open internal travel stop. If the valve is oversized, i.e. the flow rate will not bring the valve to 100% open, the disc will be able to chatter and it will eventually wear the stem and bushings in the valve. DFT can provide you with the custom sizing that this valve may need to insure that it will not chatter. Thank you for your question!

      No, it's true. The video is about check valves. The valve is closed by a back flow.

    • @jdwylde7
      @jdwylde7 4 года назад

      No he’s right...check valves only prevent backflow once usual forward force is cut off. And even then a check valve shuts itself to prevent water loss. The receiving end of the water line typically doesn’t have any water hammer because the water usually drains. Where most of your water hammer happens on on the flow side. When you close a valve quickly the water you just stopped from flowing slams into it and causes pressure build up. I’m a line repairman...we have to become state licensed for water hammer events and backflow prevention.

    • @kartikbali5098
      @kartikbali5098 4 года назад

      @Warmindking, the water hammer will be exerted by the water column after the check valve. The water doesn't drain unless there are measures made to do so. The only way the water will flow if the pump shuts down is towards the pump since the pressure now pumping the water is gone. Hence the flow illustration

    • @jdwylde7
      @jdwylde7 4 года назад

      kartik bali I haven’t worked on one water system yet that doesn’t naturally Drain water by use or relief valve. Literally worked on one today right beside the main pump from the river that busted loose. The hammer comes when the direction and force of the water moves violently which WILL happen even after the shut down. And I know this because that’s what blew the pipe out when the shut down happened. A faulty valve shut, water hammer did the rest. Before the valve. My point is, there is almost always something draining the receiving end of this. So seldom does a water hammer occur there.

    • @kartikbali5098
      @kartikbali5098 4 года назад

      @@jdwylde7 Yeah if there is a relief valve to drain the water off after the Check valve then most definitely there will not be a water hammer in the water column after the check valve. I never said that these measures are less frequently implemented. Its just that in the flow illustration, if there is no such thing installed, then the water column in which the water hammer is shown, is correct
